Angie & Spirit
I met Angie and Spirit as yearlings when Peaceful Acres Horses was contacted by the local humane society and the NY State Police about several at-risk horses in Washington County, NY. The Police asked PAH to meet them to evaluate the situation and to offer guidance to help the horses that needed care. Upon arrival, a young colt was in crisis and was down and in excruciating pain. I told the State Trooper that a veterinarian needed to be called immediately and treatment for the young colt needed to be provided. This began the process of securing three search warrants, an arrest of the horses’ abuser, and the seizure of 9 horses, 4 of whom had to be hospitalized in a local equine clinic for care. The horses were emaciated, injured, infested with parasites and lice and 4 were in critical condition. The colt who was down survived 2 days at the veterinary clinic prior to having to be humanely euthanized because of an impaction caused by garbage and parasites in his intestines, we named this sweet boy Chocolate.
Angie and Spirit were among those young horses who needed us, The NY State Police, and the veterinarian that day. Angie had been taken from the original location and was found through the police and advocates a few days after the initial arrest. Spirit had also been removed from the original location and was found after the State Police issued a search warrant and were able to seize her into PAH’s care. The story of the Whitehall, NY Case could be its own book – for the purpose of this story of Angie and Spirit, they are among the lucky ones who survived terrible abuse and neglect and found their way into the loving care of Peaceful Acres Horses. They are now 7 years old and Peaceful Acres Horses is in the process of finding them a Forever Guardian of their very own – who knows maybe they will stay together. That sure sounds like a good plan – after all, they are best friends and have survived and healed together.
